Grade of Concrete is the classification of concrete according to its compressive strength. For making concrete we use cement, sand, aggregate, and water which are mixed with certain ratio and concrete is cast and put in a cube of mm size and put in a water bath for 28 days and afterward, it is tested in a compression test.

Concrete is the single most important material in modern building and concrete mix proportions are the most important aspects of working with concrete. Without concrete, residential homes and commercial skyscrapers fall, bridges have no anchors, piers or abutments, tunnels, sidewalks, curbs, sewer systems… concrete is — literally — the foundation of development. There are only four fundamental ingredients in concrete: cement, aggregate, sand, and water, but each serves a particular purpose. Understanding the purpose of each ingredient is key to determining what concrete mix proportions are best in a given situation. An adhesive, the principal ingredient in cement is calcium oxide. Calcium oxide is a product of superheated limestone.

A good concrete mix design creates the foundation of a sound infrastructure. Concrete mix design involves a process of preparation in which a mix of ingredients creates the required strength and durability for the concrete structure. It is imperative that all ingredients be tested to determine their physical properties and the bearing capacity of the project location. The ingredients to be tested: water, fine aggregate sand , coarse aggregate, cement, chemicals, reinforcement, and soil. The values of the physical properties obtained after testing will be used as the basis for all concrete mix design considerations.

Concrete is a composite mixture which consists of Cement, Sand and Aggregate. Concrete mix design is the procedure for finding the right quantities of these materials to achieve the desired strength. Accurate concrete mix design makes concrete construction economical. Large constructions such as Bridges, dams requires huge amount of concrete, using the right quantity of constituents make the structure economical. In order to calculate or find the right amount of cement, sand and aggregate required in 1m 3 of concrete; you need to know about different grades of concrete. The procedure for finding the different grades of concrete mixes are same. The below mentioned method can be applied to any grade of concrete by changing the values.

Concrete mix ratio

The common method of expressing the proportions of ingredients of a concrete mix is in the terms of parts or ratios of cement, fine and coarse aggregates. A properly designed mixture possesses the desired workability for the fresh concrete and the required durability and strength for the hardened concrete. For e. All the above mixes yield an amount of concrete slightly more than the quantity of coarse aggregate in the mix. Concrete Grades Concrete grades defines as a minimums strength of the concrete it must possess after the 28th days of constructions with properly control quality.

Grades of concrete are defined by the strength and composition of the concrete, and the minimum strength the concrete should have following 28 days of initial construction. The grade of concrete is understood in measurements of MPa, where M stands for mix and the MPa denotes the overall strength. Concrete mixes are defined in ascending numbers of 5, starting at 10, and show the compressive strength of the concrete after 28 days. For instance, C10 has the strength of 10 newtons, C15 has the strength of 15 newtons, C20 has 20 newtons strength and so on.
