Life forms including humans, other animals, plants, and microbes are interdependent; together with the non-living environment they comprise ecological systems. Wildlife species in those systems have intrinsic value and are connected to human health and wellbeing. Thus, the promotion of healthy ecosystems that sustain wildlife is a social responsibility locally and globally.

Infectious Disease, Endangerment, and Extinction

Ross D. MacPhee, Alex D. Infectious disease, especially virulent infectious disease, is commonly regarded as a cause of fluctuation or decline in biological populations. However, it is not generally considered as a primary factor in causing the actual endangerment or extinction of species. We review here the known historical examples in which disease has, or has been assumed to have had, a major deleterious impact on animal species, including extinction, and highlight some recent cases in which disease is the chief suspect in causing the outright endangerment of particular species.

Zoonoses with a wildlife reservoir represent a major public health problem, affecting all continents. Hundreds of pathogens and many different transmission modes are involved, and many factors influence the epidemiology of the various zoonoses. The importance and recognition of wildlife as a reservoir of zoonoses are increasing.

Wild birds interconnect all parts of the globe through annual cycles of migration with little respect for country or continental borders. Although wild birds are reservoir hosts for a high diversity of gamma- and deltacoronaviruses, we have little understanding of the ecology or evolution of any of these viruses. In this review, we use genome sequence and ecological data to disentangle the evolution of coronaviruses in wild birds. Specifically, we explore host range at the levels of viral genus and species, and reveal the multi-host nature of many viral species, albeit with biases to certain types of avian host.

Here we present a collection of articles published in Acta Veterinaria Scandinavica advancing our knowledge of wildlife research, ranging from diseases in reindeer to mountain goats to gulls to otters to moles. A real strength of the journal is our strong expertise in Artic and Scandinavian wild animals. We bring together articles covering some of the following topics:. We invite you to contribute to this collection by submitting original research or reviews on topics relating to wildlife diseases. An overall increase in poaching of white rhinoceros results in captive breeding becoming a significant component of white rhinoceros conservation.
