Jul 19, Adam Calvert rated it it was amazing Shelves: theology , favorites. Read this book, and read it again. This is by far one of the greatest works I've ever read on the subject concerning the very heart of the Christian faith: redemption.
Systematically going through the aspects of both the accomplishment of redemption and its application to the believer, Murray leaves the believer with nothing but a humble fear and an unquenchable joy because of the person and work of Christ the Savior. The book is laid out as follows: Part 1: Redemption Accomplished 1. The Necessity Read this book, and read it again. The Necessity of the Atonement 2. The Nature of the Atonement 3. The Perfection of the Atonement 4.
The Extent of the Atonement 5. Conclusion Part 2: Redemption Applied 1. The Order of Application 2. Effectual Calling 3. Regeneration 4. Faith and Repentance 5. Justification 6. Adoption 7. Sanctification 8. Perseverance 9. Union with Christ Glorification After taking the reader through the Scriptures as they pertain to each of these topics, one cannot help but to bask in the glory of being united to Christ, rest peacefully in the redemption He accomplished for your sake, and look forward boldly into the future when we shall be glorified with Him because of what He's done.
This book is going to be one that I'll read over and over again. It never gets old, and its audience is never unfit. Whatever your current status in your walk with the Lord, this book will refresh your heart and convict your soul - to the glory of Christ our Lord and Savior!

I have a greater appreciation for what Jesus has done and the implications in my life after reading this. It's not a simple read, but the heavy portions are worth pushing through. A compelling case for penal substitution and the Reformed perspective on redemption and its application. Oct 24, Joshua Schwisow rated it it was amazing. This is the book from which I first learned Reformed Theology. Murray engages directly with Scripture and writes of glorious truths in a beautiful way.
Worth frequent re-reading. An excellent and biblical argument for the fact that salvation from start to finish is of God. Feb 04, Samuel Parkison rated it really liked it. This book is amazing. Murray does a great job at offering the bare bones arguments for definite atonement, but more importantly, he does so in a deeply doxological way. This is theology at its finest because it isn't stoic, it's exuberant. I'm so glad that at the cross, Christ didn't merely die to make salvation possible, he died to save.
Aug 22, Timothy Dehne rated it it was amazing Shelves: theology. This is an enjoyable read. It is made up of a collection of essays that he put together to make a book. Moreover, it is not overly technical and is pretty easy to read. Murray provides a great overview of the Reformed doctrine of salvation. There are two things that I like about this book. First, Murray works hard to ground his theological conclusions in the text of Scripture.
Second, he demonstrates that one cannot separate the historical work accomplished by Christ and the application of salva This is an enjoyable read. Second, he demonstrates that one cannot separate the historical work accomplished by Christ and the application of salvation to his people.
I like this because a lot of Christians want to either define the gospel in terms of the story of Jesus' life or in terms of the ordo solutis alone.
In the historic Reformed doctrine of salvation, they go together. Apr 09, Joe Molinari rated it really liked it. This is a great book for anyone looking for an understanding of atonement, calling, regeneration, faith, repentance, justification, adoption, sanctification, perseverance, union, and glorification.
It is not always an easy read, as I found myself having to reread portions. This is a book that I shall return to again and again. Apr 27, Miaoling rated it it was amazing. An excerpt: The order in the application of Redemption is found to be, calling, regeneration, faith and repentance, justification, adoption, sanctification, perseverance, glorification.
When this order is carefully weighed we find that there is a logic which evinces and brings into clear focus governing principle of salvation in all of its aspects, the grace of God in its sovereignty and efficacy. Salvation is of the Lord in its application as well as in its conception and accomplishment. How so heartening and freeing.
Review: "Redemption Accomplished and Applied" by John Murray
Murray argues that the biblical witness views redemption as a seamless garment. Atonement accomplishes such a redemption through Christ. Salvation set forth such a redemption in sinful humans. That is, he begins not by proffering that the atonement is any matter to be deduced first and foremost from a prior premise but instead to be hung upon the declaration of the love of God. In terms of historical theology, Murray proceeds then to discuss views on the necessity of the atonement: hypothetical necessity and consequent absolute necessity. On this view therefore God could save without an atonement, though he decreed to do so.
