One very important part of all HVAC systems is the basic refrigeration cycle. It contains four major components: the compressor, condenser, expansion device, and evaporator. The system pipes refrigerant through these four components in a loop, giving the cycle its name and keeping your home cool! The refrigerant in your system starts as vapour in the first component of the cycle, the compressor. The compressor forces the refrigerant through the system, squeezing the cool refrigerant and turning it into a very hot, high-pressure vapour.
Mechanical refrigeration is accomplished by continuously circulating, evaporating, and condensing a fixed supply of refrigerant in a closed system. Evaporation occurs at a low temperature and low pressure while condensation occurs at a high temperature and high pressure. Thus, it is possible to transfer heat from an area of low temperature i. Referring to the illustration below, beginning the cycle at the evaporator inlet 1 , the low-pressure liquid expands, absorbs heat, and evaporates, changing to a low-pressure gas at the evaporator outlet 2.

Heat pumps may use the heat output of the refrigeration process, and also may be designed to be reversible, but are otherwise similar to air conditioning units. Refrigeration has had a large impact on industry, lifestyle, agriculture, and settlement patterns.
