Sachdeva, Mehak. The urban system has been a subject of much attention and inquiry, more so in the past two or so decades.

In the midst of this revolution was the breakthrough of the electrical motor and the combustion engine that liberated economic growth from a set of constraints that had become more inhibiting with industrial expansion during the 19th century Enflo et al. These constraints concerned the supply and price of energy, e. If accepted for publication, your response will be hyperlinked to the article.

Resilience, the ability of complex systems to adapt to changing conditions, is a key frontier in ecological research and is especially relevant in creative urban design, as urban areas exemplify complex systems. The complexity of urban areas results from their spatial heterogeneity, their intertwined material and energy fluxes, and the integration of social and natural processes.

About the journal

Journal of Urban Ecology is a scientific journal covering all aspects of urban environments including the ecological and social sciences as well as urban design and planning. This includes the biology of the organisms that inhabit urban areas, human social issues encountered within urban landscapes, the diversity of ecosystem services, and the design of sustainable and resilient cities. The journal covers the ecology in cities and the ecology of cities, in both developed and developing countries. These subjects include basic ecological questions in urban areas, such as how ecological patterns and processes differ in cities compared to other environments and what effect urbanisation has on the ecology of organisms, as well as topics on the interactions between ecological and social systems in the urban setting. Journal of Urban Ecology also publishes research on green architecture, smart growth, progressive planning, water conservation and efficiency, and environmentally friendly infrastructure. Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford.

Resilient cities: meaning, models, and metaphor for integrating the ecological, socio-economic, and planning realms. Skip to Main Content. Skip to Search Box. Skip to Top Navigation Bar.

With the notable uptick of natural disasters impacting densely-populated areas, attention to the subject of urban resilience has increased among ecologists, economists, engineers, social scientists, and designers. But despite an extraordinary cross-disciplinary interest in a single subject, the urban resilience discourse has remained largely siloed by discipline. This essay builds on concepts of resilience from ecology and social science and positions urban design in itself at the intersection of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture as uniquely situated for integrating and operationalizing various concepts of urban resilience. The authors propose a socio-ecological urban design approach that bridges natural, human, and spatial systems and is empirically grounded in historical research, field observations, and interviews with informal settler families ISFs living along the shoreline of Laguna de Bay in Metro Manila.

Linking Theory and Practice for Sustainable Cities
