In the fuel tank and in older automobiles the carburetor , hydrocarbons that are continually evaporating from gasoline constitute a minor but not insignificant contributing factor in pollution.

These emission standards have been reducing levels of Particulate Matter PM and Nitrogen Oxides NOx in diesel engines systematically since when the first standards went into effect. The European directives are defined as stages and are typically referred to as Euro 1, Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5 and Euro 6 for light-duty vehicles. These gases are two of the main causes of the greenhouse effect. Particulate Matter PM is mainly made up of tiny carbon particles and other hydrocarbon substances which are created when not all of the fuel is burnt during combustion, generally when the engine is cooler.

Cars, trucks, buses, off-road vehicles and planes are all considered mobile sources of air pollution. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons are released when fuel burns in an internal combustion engine. They may also be released when vehicle tailpipes emit air and fuel residuals. Gasoline vapors also escape into the atmosphere during refueling and when fuel vaporizes from engines and fuel systems caused by vehicle operation or hot weather.
