Computer input and output devices
To interact with a computer, you need an intermediary, something that receives data you input and translates it for your computer. This intermediary is an input device. Input devices for communication are those that let you send sounds, thoughts, images or files to others via the computer. For business, input devices let you reach out to customers, colleagues and vendors. Businesses sometimes have hard copies of documents or images at one location that someone at another location needs to see. Scanners can translate a hard copy into a digital file, which allows a connected computer to receive it.
Such devices make up the peripheral equipment of modern digital computer systems. Peripherals are commonly divided into three kinds: input devices, output devices, and storage devices which partake of the characteristics of the first two. An input device converts incoming data and instructions into a pattern of electrical signals in binary code that are comprehensible to a digital computer. An output device reverses the process, translating the digitized signals into a form intelligible to the user. At one time punched-card and paper-tape readers were extensively used for inputting, but these have now been supplanted by more efficient devices.
Chapter 9: Input-Output Devices
Keyboard is the most common and very popular input device which helps to input data to the computer. The layout of the keyboard is like that of traditional typewriter, although there are some additional keys provided for performing additional functions. These keys include the letter keys A-Z and digit keys 09 which generally give the same layout as that of typewriters. It is used to enter the numeric data or cursor movement. Generally, it consists of a set of 17 keys that are laid out in the same configuration used by most adding machines and calculators. The twelve function keys are present on the keyboard which are arranged in a row at the top of the keyboard. Each function key has a unique meaning and is used for some specific purpose.
What is the difference between an input and output device?
An input device is essentially a piece of hardware component used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as computer or information device. Common inputs devices on modern computers include keyboards, mouse and touch screen which are used to enter commands and data directly. Other examples of input devices include scanners, digital cameras, joysticks and microphones.
In this lesson students consider a number of computing devices to determine what types of inputs and outputs they use. Groups are assigned to a computing device and based on a teacher-provided definition of input and output, list the inputs and outputs of their device. Earlier in the activity students are prompted to focus on more obvious physical inputs and outputs e. Throughout the lesson the teacher records inputs and outputs that are identified on a T-Chart at the front of the room.
